the medium is tedium
LAURA BRUCE, RUTH EWAN, JENNY HOGARTH, LAURA HYND, KATE OWENS, PROUDFOOT
21 Feb - 20 Mar 2004

‘'the medium is tedium’ represents a diverse group show of selected emergent local, national and international artists working predominately with three-dimensional pieces. Jenny Hogarth's sculpture explores the relationship between consumerism, pageantry and mass ornamentation. The froth from a spilled cola bottle has spawned a pyramidal nuclear family. Kate Owens’ practice incorporates traditional concerns of process and materials. For this show she plans to create a window display and a folding screen through the use of processed snacks.
Ruth Ewan displays a rudimentary disregard for socio-economic exchange structures which is evident throughout her work. Ruth will be showing a CD jukebox, setting up an economic exchange where money is being traded for something uncommodifiable and mundane. Edinburgh based artists Jenny Hogarth, Kate Owens and (now London based) Ruth Ewan, all share some common ground having been involved with artist-run projects within Edinburgh through the groups; ‘Magnifitat’ and ‘Win Together Lose Together Play Together Stay Together’.
Also making new work for the exhibition is Glasgow based Lynn Hynd. Lynn’s practice revolves around abandoned objects often discarded furniture were the defunct quality of the surface; the mirroring, decorative features and veneers are ornamented with both positive and negative shapes.
Laura Bruce currently based in Berlin will be showing two pieces. ‘New Day’ (2003) is a ten-minute monologue in which the character charts her day in mundane detail, unswervingly engrossed by the decisions and judgements that structure her domestic life. Along side ‘Laundrywide’ (2003) a landscape of second hand clothes.
Proudfoot; a collaborative group who are 'proud of being women with a fetish for footwear', will be showing a version of their piece ‘A Bird in the House’; first shown at the Tagteam Experiment in Edinburgh last year.

DAVID BLYTH AND SARA GALLIE

Its alright to lose your way once in a while so long as you have the means of getting back on the right path. Journey planners and navigational aids such as maps and compasses are useful items for anyone who seeks to benefit from travelling off the beaten track. For David Blyth and Sara Gallie, this track starts with the ‘Tree of Inspiration’ - a magical tree which holds the Badges of Knowledge and Wisdom within its golden branches.
The autobiographical works of David Blyth and Sara Gallie explore their relationship with the natural world and their perception of it. Inspired by dreams and meditation, forgotten beliefs, local heresies and traditional crafts their work attempts to come to terms with their present position in the mortal coil and their current understanding of the mysterious forces of Nature.
